Stephen Thomas

How, exactly, did a boy from the Valleys end up representing Great Britain at 3 Summer Paralympics and winning multiple medals in the Mixed Sonar class at the Disabled Sailing World Championships?
Meet Stephen Thomas, and hear his account of an incredible journey culminating in a career as a World Champion sailor.

November 16th

Between 1909 and 1963, at least 80 vessels were beached at Purton, originating from a stormy night 100 years ago when there was a massive landslip in a bank between the river and the parallel Sharpness to Gloucester Canal. A plea went out to commercial boat owners for old vessels to be run aground to plug the breach.
Paul Barnett will take us through the story of how it has taken more than 10 years of in-depth research before the mighty Severn has been persuaded to give up her secrets and unearth the wonders that are the Purton Hulks.

November 23rd

Big ships, little ships…Ever wondered who organises their safe navigation?
Duty Asst. Haven Master, Dave Herbert, will tell us this, and more, in this evening’s talk about the Bristol Vessel Traffic Service, (VTS). They provide harbour users with comprehensive information on vessel movements, height of tide and weather conditions in the upper Bristol Channel from the Holm Islands. Pilot orders and lock times are allocated by VTS to ensure the safety and efficiency of navigation, and the talk will include essential advice
to leisure craft.

Forget CSI on television, Colin will share secrets from his eminent career, including how DNA mass blood screening helped solve actual cases.

Is she a ship? Is she a plane?SS Great Britain
Find out, as Commander Philip Unwin, who has been involved with the SS Great Britain Trust as a Guide and External Speaker since 2008, describes the conception of the ship, the four phases of her life, her salvage in the Falkland Islands and return to the very dock in which she was built.

Nigel Irens:  ‘Slippery Boats’

Nigel Irens Offshore Multihull Development

In nautical circles, tonight’s speaker will need little introduction as he is at the cutting-edge of Offshore Racing Multihull development.
Even in apparently unrelated vessels, unexpected threads of technology overlap more than you’d think; Nigel says that it’s just as exciting to apply some of the slippery technology to all kinds of other vessels – both power and sail. His design portfolio is wide-ranging, from record-breaking yachts to innovative cruising designs and other sailing designs of traditional appearance. Many of Nigel’s designs are for a specific purpose; one such was Ellen MacArthur’s trimaran ‘B&Q,built specifically to break the single-handed circumnavigation record- and she did!

BYC 90th Birthday Celebrations 2018

Calling all members and friends, for our 90th Anniversary we are collecting photographs taken at BYC over the years. We have many already but if you have any historic photos of activities of yourselves and/or family members at the club that you can share, could you please contact Keith Lewis The Vice Commodore. The photographs will be scanned and returned to you afterwards, we’re particularly interested in the early years but any period is welcome. We are very short of photographs showing the Barry Yacht and Motor Boat Club era, so if you have any that we can use we would love to hear from you.

Barry Yacht Club ShopBYC Shop form

Christmas is just around the corner, why not treat yourself or your loved ones this winter, to something from the BYC shop. By far the most popular items are the hoodies – lovely and warm, and really quite smart too, or the body warmers as worn by several members – they’re very warm and really versatile.

If you don’t want to spend quite as much as that there are always the t-shirts or in our unpredictable weather – the beanies (couldn't be easier to get hold of a beanie or peaked cap as some are available behind the bar).

For information and price list/ order form just click on the poster – but please remember full payment is required before the order will be placed. Just hand your order in at the bar or give to Wendy or John and we’ll let you know as soon as we get your items back from our supplier. There’s also more information behind the bar about the items we can supply.
